What Does School Insurance Cover?

School insurance combines multiple covers in one comprehensive policy. Typical coverage includes:

Public Liability

Protection if a pupil, visitor, or member of the public is injured on school premises or during school activities — typically £5m–£10m cover.

Employers' Liability

Legal requirement for all schools employing teaching and support staff. Minimum £5m cover required by law under the Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969.

Professional Indemnity

Protection against claims arising from professional negligence, errors in teaching, or failures in pastoral care. Particularly important for independent schools and specialist educational providers.

Governors' & Trustees' Liability

Protection for school governors, trustees, and academy trust directors against claims arising from their management decisions and governance responsibilities.

Buildings Insurance

Cover for school buildings, sports facilities, and outbuildings against fire, storm, flood, and other insured perils. Includes reinstatement to current building regulations.

Contents & Equipment

Cover for IT equipment, teaching aids, musical instruments, sports equipment, and other school contents against theft, fire, and accidental damage.

Business Interruption

Cover for loss of fee income or additional costs incurred if the school is unable to operate following an insured event such as fire or flood.

Personal Accident for Pupils

Cover for accidental injury to pupils during school hours, sports activities, and school trips — providing lump sum or weekly benefit payments.

School Trip & Excursion Cover

Cover for domestic and overseas school trips, including cancellation, medical expenses, and liability arising from activities during the trip.

Cyber Liability

Protection against data breaches, ransomware, and cyber incidents — increasingly important for schools holding sensitive pupil and staff data under GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do independent schools need the same insurance as state schools?
Independent schools have different governance structures and funding arrangements from state schools, which affects their insurance requirements. Independent schools typically need buildings insurance, professional indemnity, and governors' liability cover that state schools may obtain through local authority or academy trust arrangements. We can advise on the specific requirements for your school.
Are governors personally liable for school decisions?
School governors and academy trust directors can face personal liability for decisions made in their governance role. Governors' and trustees' liability insurance provides protection against claims arising from alleged wrongful acts, errors, or omissions in their governance responsibilities. This cover is particularly important for academy trust directors who have company director obligations.
Does school insurance cover overseas trips?
Standard school insurance policies may not automatically cover overseas trips. You should confirm with your broker that your policy includes cover for overseas excursions, including cancellation, medical expenses, and liability. Some insurers offer a specific school trips extension; others require a separate policy for overseas activities.
What cyber cover do schools need?
Schools hold significant volumes of sensitive personal data about pupils, parents, and staff. Under GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, schools have obligations to protect this data and to notify the ICO of data breaches. Cyber liability insurance covers the costs of responding to a data breach, including notification costs, regulatory fines, and third-party claims. Given the increasing frequency of ransomware attacks on educational institutions, cyber cover is an important consideration.
Do we need separate insurance for the school minibus?
School minibuses used to transport pupils require motor insurance with appropriate business use cover. Standard private motor insurance is not sufficient. We can arrange fleet or minibus insurance as part of a broader school insurance programme.
Is professional indemnity required for independent schools?
Professional indemnity insurance is not a legal requirement for schools, but it is strongly recommended. It provides protection against claims arising from alleged negligence in teaching, pastoral care, or educational advice. Claims can arise from parents who believe their child has suffered harm as a result of the school's professional failings.
