What Does Sports Club Insurance Cover?

Sports club insurance combines multiple covers in one comprehensive policy. Typical coverage includes:

Public Liability

Protection if a member of the public, spectator, or participant is injured or suffers property damage — typically £5m–£10m cover.

Employers' Liability

Legal requirement if you employ paid coaches, administrators, or groundskeepers. Minimum £5m cover required by law.

Personal Accident for Members

Lump sum or weekly benefit payments if a member suffers accidental injury during club activities, training, or matches.

Equipment & Contents

Cover for sports equipment, kit, machinery, and clubhouse contents against theft, fire, and accidental damage.

Buildings Insurance

Protection for the clubhouse, pavilion, or sports facility against fire, storm, flood, and other insured perils.

Officials' Liability

Protection for club officials, committee members, and trustees against claims arising from their management decisions.

Voluntary Workers Cover

Cover for volunteers injured whilst working for the club — essential for clubs relying on volunteer coaches and helpers.

Bar & Liquor Liability

Specialist cover for clubs operating a licensed bar, including liability arising from the service of alcohol.

Business Interruption

Cover for loss of income if the clubhouse or facility is damaged and temporarily unusable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need employers' liability if all our coaches are volunteers?
If all coaches and helpers are genuine volunteers with no contract of employment, employers' liability is not a legal requirement. However, you should still arrange voluntary workers cover to protect volunteers injured whilst working for the club.
Does our governing body insurance cover us?
Many national governing bodies provide a basic level of public liability cover as part of affiliation. However, this cover is often limited and may not cover all the club's activities, property, or officials. We can review your governing body cover and identify any gaps.
Do we need separate insurance for junior members?
Junior members can typically be included under the club's public liability and personal accident policies. You should confirm that the policy covers activities involving junior members and that appropriate safeguarding procedures are in place.
What about insurance for away matches and tours?
Standard sports club policies typically cover matches and activities at the club's usual venues. Away matches, tours, and overseas trips may require a separate extension or policy. We can arrange cover for specific events and tours.
Do we need separate insurance for our club bar?
If the club operates a licensed bar, you should ensure that your policy includes liquor liability cover. This covers claims arising from the service of alcohol, including claims from individuals who suffer injury after consuming alcohol at the club.
Is personal accident cover included as standard?
Personal accident cover is not always included as standard and may need to be added as an extension. We can arrange personal accident cover for members, coaches, and officials, providing lump sum or weekly benefit payments in the event of accidental injury.
